Rumbaroo is a free tile game on the website and in the iOS app. This page explains how to play, how saves work, and what to try when sign-in, sound, or a saved game misbehaves.

The short version
  • You can play without an account. An account is optional.
  • Solo games keep a Continue save and one Parked game. Daily is a shared Joey board each UTC day.
  • The host of an online table can pause it for up to 7 days. The same board, hands, and turn come back.
  • Delete an account from the account menu: Delete account…, then Delete account. Keep it cancels.
  • For help, privacy questions, and account requests, email support@storytimeplayco.com.

How to play

On your turn, do exactly one thing: Discard a tile that matches the top of the pile by color or number, Meld runs and groups, or Draw one tile. A run is 3 or more consecutive numbers in one color. A group is 3 or 4 of the same number in different colors. Action tiles are only discarded.

Meld 3 or more tiles from your hand in one turn and you pick an opponent: they miss their next turn, or they draw 2. When your move will leave you with one tile, press Rumbaroo! before you finish. The match is first to 50 unless you raise the target in setup. Joey, Wallaby, and Big Red change which action tiles are in the bag.

The full rules are on the home page under How to play. In the game, ? Rules opens the same rules, including Party tables for 5–8 players.

Daily, Continue, and Parked

Daily is Joey against one computer, first to 50, and the same board for everyone on that UTC day. You can retry. Only a win clears the day. The daily streak counts calendar days you cleared. It is separate from the win streak in your stats. On the setup screen the card says Play today’s board, Continue today’s challenge, or Replay today.

A solo or versus-computer game saves after every turn. Close the page or the app and the home screen, and the setup screen, offer Continue game (or Continue daily when that save is today’s challenge). Leaving a game asks Save and exit, Keep playing, or Abandon game. Save and exit keeps the game and does not change your stats. Abandon ends it and counts as a loss. It does not clear a daily you already won.

You also have one Parked game. Dealing a new game, or starting Daily, while Continue is full asks you to park that save. Parking is not a loss. The setup card says Parked game and Resume parked game. Resume swaps it with Continue. If both slots are already full, the game asks which one to keep. The one you do not keep is discarded, and that discard counts as a loss.

Discard on either card asks you to tap again (Yes, discard it). Discarding counts as a loss, the same as abandoning. Signed in, Continue, Parked, and the daily streak follow the account, and the newest save wins. As a guest they stay on that device. The iOS app also keeps those two saves with the app.

Online pause

Online play is a private room with a code. It is not the solo Continue save. During a live game the host’s leave button says Pause. Pause & exit freezes the board, hands, and turn for up to 7 days. Seats stay, and the clocks stop. The screen says the table is held for up to 7 days and shows the room code.

Only the host sees Resume. Resume puts the same board, hands, and turn back in play, and the turn clocks start over. Other players rejoin with the room code. The device that paused shows Paused room and Continue on the setup screen. Exit while it is already paused keeps the pause. Leave without pausing hands your tiles to the house and counts as a loss. Abandon table closes the room for everyone.

A room that is not paused closes after 24 hours without activity. A paused table is held for 7 days from the pause, even if nobody is in it.

Sound and accessibility

Tap Sound in the top bar. The panel is Sound effects, Volume, Background music (off until you turn it on), Voice callouts, and Opponent moves (Normal or Fast). Done closes it, and so does Escape. Sounds are made as you play. Nothing is downloaded.

Browsers and the app start audio on the first tap. If a game is quiet, turn Sound effects on, raise Volume, then tap the table once. Backgrounding the app can suspend sound; come back and tap again. On iPhone, the first tap also asks the app to play even when the ringer switch is silent. If it is still quiet, check the side volume buttons and the ringer.

Tiles, buttons, and the game log have text names. Sort color and Sort number reorder your rack. If the device is set to Reduce Motion, the large action banners stay calmer. Voice callouts can be turned off in the sound panel. The iOS app may also give a short tap when you play a tile, meld, snap, or call Rumbaroo.

Delete your account

Open the game and tap your name in the top bar. Before you have a name, that button says Sign in. The setup screen has the same account button. In the menu, choose Delete account…. The next screen is Delete your account?. Delete account confirms. Keep it cancels. If it fails, the screen says Could not delete. Try again.

That removes the player name, the synced stats, the daily streak stored on the account, the Continue and Parked games stored on the account, and the leaderboard places, and it deletes the sign-in. The confirm screen tells you that stats saved on this device stay. A solo game still stored on this device stays until you discard it, clear this site’s data, or remove the app’s data. Sign out in the same menu only returns you to guest play. It does not delete the account.

Troubleshooting

Sign-in and sync

  • Sign-in is optional. Keep playing as a guest leaves you in the game. There is no password. The choices are Continue with Google, Continue with Apple, or Email me a link.
  • After Email me a link, the screen says to check your email. The link works once and expires soon. No email after a minute? Check spam, or choose Use a different email.
  • Google and Apple are paused while a solo game or a room is open, because they leave the table. Finish or leave the game, or use the email link, which stays on the page.
  • If you don’t see Sign in, reload. Guest play still works, and a solo save stays on that device until you can sign in.
  • The first sign-in on a device adds that device’s guest stats to the account. Later, Continue, Parked, and the daily streak sync with the account. The newest save wins. A game already on the screen is not replaced by a save from another device. When one is waiting, the game says to tap Continue game or Resume parked game.
  • A failed sync does not block the game. The copy on the device stands, and a later save tries again. Online rooms show Connection lost. Reconnecting… when the poll drops. If pause or abandon cannot reach the table, the message is Could not reach the table. Check your connection and try again.

Audio

  • Open Sound and confirm Sound effects is on and Volume is above zero. Background music and Voice callouts are separate switches.
  • Tap once inside the game. Sound does not start until that first gesture, and it can need another tap after you switch away and come back.
  • Opponent moves set to Fast only shortens how the computer’s moves are shown. It does not mute the table.

Saved games

  • Continue and Parked are solo saves. A private room is the room code, and a paused room is listed on its own.
  • If Continue is missing, look for Parked game. Resume swaps the two. Discarding either one is a loss, after a second tap.
  • Signed in on two devices, play on one at a time if you want that device’s save to stay newest. The other device picks it up the next time it loads home or setup and no game is on screen.
  • Sorry, this game could not be saved on this device means the browser or app refused storage. Free some space, or leave private-browsing mode, then use Save and exit again. Clearing site data, or deleting the app’s data, removes a guest save.
  • A paused online table is not in Continue. Use Paused room and the room code. After 7 days that pause expires. An unpaused room expires after 24 hours without activity.
